• Horror movies| He hates the jumpscares because it makes him scream and he honestly can’t help but end up thinking about scary movies late at night. Especially psychological movies.

• Artificial banana flavoring| He HATES the taste it gives off. He likes real bananas but artificial banana flavoring literally gives him a headache.

• Hangovers| No one likes them but it’s a very reoccurring and consistent problem for him.

• His headaches| They kind of just happen in episodes and it can be a very hard thing for him.

• Gossip| He specifically hates people talking about him. He doesn’t mind being rude to anyone else, though. Behind their backs or in front of them.

Everything he does is genuine. He’s read like an open book whether he likes it or not. (He doesn’t like it.) Everything he does is with a brutal intensity. He feels with bleeding honesty. That’s one of the few things about him that haven’t changed. But these days everything seems so much worse... He can’t help but do everything with a ferocity that comes from helplessness and pain. He’s passionate but built like a messy homemade bomb: unstable and ready to explode at any given time. He has never been good at keeping his emotions in check. As someone who is lost and angry at the world, he’s destroying himself with all of his emotions and he’s prone to collateral damage. He can’t really help but ruin things and he can’t help but hurt people; it’s built into him. He can be pretty physically violent to everyone.. He gets into fights where he’ll take it too far and really hurt people.


But more often than not, he’s just bored instead of angry... your average piece of shit. He tells it how he thinks it is and he’s keen on delivering his opinions. (He’s got a lot of unpopular ones.) He’s got a way around his words and he hardly cares about anything anymore, not to mention what people think about him. He used to be pretty confident, but unfortunately arrogant. It’s left him empty, insubordinate and angry... His world has come crashing down at his feet so he doesn’t see the harm in letting it burn too. He’s got a sharp tongue and a quick wit to back it up. He usually uses those things to be mean to people... other times he’s not witty at all— just childish and shameless simply for the purpose of pissing people off.


But either way, he’s a good judge of character. He picks things up like little details from people and puts things together quickly. He knows how people act and can tell a lot about them from simple gestures like the way they talk or display themselves. He’s good at picking up concepts and applying them.


Fortunately, he isn’t just emotional breakdowns, violence and being a general dickhead. He’s fairly dependable for certain people. There’s a small group of people he’s managed to not hurt too badly and he’s dead set on making sure he does everything in his power to keep them relatively safe. He values his family above every single fucking thing in the world including himself. That would go for the same towards anyone close he would be able to keep a hold on… he can’t stand the idea of letting these people down, and he constantly does, but he never breaks his word. But he does not give it lightly.

• Born in a shady neighborhood in Larkspur City in a small, broken down apartment. Mom was an escort.

• His mom met their step-dad when they were 5 and got married within a year and they moved to Phlox and into a nice mansion.

PERSONAL HISTORY

Kennedy was born part of a set of triplets. His siblings were Artemis and Griffin. They lived in the poor part of Larkspur. The part with shady business teeming in the streets. He doesn’t remember a lot about it but he remembers the shady people he’d see and how it always had life at night... It was near his mom’s work. She was an escort mainly, but she did a lot of things to keep them floating. It was a hard job, being a single mom of three but she was a proud mom and she loved them to bits.


He was always really close with his siblings. They were an inseparable team and a trio of Hell toddlers that would accept nothing less than being with each other at all times. He doesn’t remember much other than all the dangerous things they’d get into together. It was them and the world.


Sometimes their real dad would drop by— it was awesome but his mom hated it. He’d buy them things and take them places but he always wanted something. That was a lesson he and his siblings would learn later. He’d always come around to win their hearts and break them until they learned not to give their hearts to him.


Soon enough their mom met a decent rich man, Michael J. Marks. They met in a dingy hotel where she took on clients and weirdly enough they just ended up talking all night. It was true love and it was a dream. They married within 3 years. Michael genuinely cared for him and his siblings and could be pretty strict about it… Michael himself had came from a shady background but he built himself a future. He didn’t believe in excuses and laziness. Kenny tended to clash with his stepdad. Where Michael thought Ken was an arrogant entitled brat, Ken thought Michael was a condescending douche. He hated him, to say the least. He wasn’t his real dad so he had no idea why he was trying to impose all these rules on him.


They moved to a mansion in Phlox when Kenny turned five. It was a big change now that they were in a pretty safe environment. They were surrounded by a diverse range of other families and most of all: peace. Down the street was his neighbor Royce. Their moms had been friends for a long time and instantly he and his siblings kicked it off with the kid. They met another kid in town whose parents owned that bakery. He became an important part of their lives… Soon Kennedy and his siblings were enrolled in the Wolfe school district with Avery. They received schooling before but it was a hard process since the triplets seriously did not take separation and socializing well but they managed.


He got into hockey when he was in 5th grade. He was pretty late in the game but he showed to be a talented goalie. He honed his talent and it became his life and his dreams. He was going to grow up and become a successful hockey player and he’d work hard for it. He wanted out of the small town.


By the time he entered high school he and his siblings had slowly drifted apart. He still hadn’t seemed to lose the bratty behavior his brother and sister did; instead, he did what teenagers did and adopted that hierarchy bullshit as a popular kid and started hanging with a bad crowd. He kind of became that boy in town that your kids weren’t allowed to hang out with. He was always kind of a terrible kid but he didn’t really plan on adhering to the bullshit rich popular kid stereotype. But as a teenager that’s all he knew how to do.


After four years him and his siblings graduated Wolfe high. They all found ties away from Printy county. Kennedy was scouted by a few colleges and ultimately decided to play for the Batenhart Men’s Hockey Team. It started to seem like he’d finally shed all that small town scene and become someone bigger…


He was supposed to go pro. He was supposed to be drafted for the NHL when he turned 20. After a nasty accident where someone crashed into the goal with him he sustained a concussion. It seemed normal at first but he’d taken one to many and was discovered to have post-concussion syndrome. It ended his career pretty quickly before it even started. With that everything was ripped away from him. It felt like he lost himself completely like his life was ripped out right from under him.


He was sent home to recover with his mom. It sucked to live under the same roof as his stepdad again but he couldn’t complain. They had a nice house. For the next year, he stayed at home getting slowly better physically while his mental state decayed. He began to change. He had always been awful but he was happy and confident. He was sure of his future. Now he was lost, angry, destructive and loathing.


Eventually, after a year, his condition reduced to occasional episodes but his career was over. He wasn’t sure how to move on and on most days he’d spend his time doing nothing— sort of just stumbling by in life. Then the Gru came. It was a shock to the entire world and he was not convinced the aliens were here for good

He has kind of a reputation as the town troublemaker. He always has since he’s kind of terrible. He’s known for sleeping around and generally being a sleaze and a drunk. He hangs around Larkspur the most, in clubs.


As for his opinions on the Gru, he still isn't convinced the aliens are here for completely unselfish reasons. Based on the sci-fi movies he’s watched he knows better than to trust them, especially because they took away their guns and they appear to be more advanced too. He’s also heard things from some friends about the Gru that isn’t good news. He thinks it'd be stupid to cause trouble but if he could be inclined to take action if he feels more threatened. His other siblings have moved back home as well to keep the family together in times of stress-- also most of them just really wanted to see aliens.

• Gardening/Plants in general: Huge nature nut! She adores the woods, and while it’s rare for her to visit them, she tries to go when she can. In the meantime, her apartment windows are full of plant pots and her balcony is a makeshift garden. The feeling of raising something from a tiny seed to a full grown plant makes her think of children, and it’s a small comfort.
  
• Big Dogs: The bigger the dog, the better! Especially when they’re the high energy kinds-- sadly, her nana’s apartment doesn’t allow for her to keep any animals for herself, but, she walks dogs every day for a living so she isn’t complaining too much.
• Biking: Because she rarely drives, her bike ( affectionately named Rebecca ) is her closest friend! April can be seen pedaling down the streets with a helmet and a little bell, usually accompanied by a dog or two at any time of day!
  
• The Cello: She brought it with her from home, she was second chair in her high school's chamber orchestra! She’s a little out of practice, though.
  
• Canned Food: Stemming from her paranoia, April hoards canned food. “It can’t go bad, no matter how awful it tastes!”, she claims, storing for the zombie apocalypse she’s convinced will happen. Not really, but, it’s just a cheaper way to store food so she doesn’t have to go to the store so often.
  
• Hiking / Camping: Back to the nature love, hiking and camping are both super important to her! The rare instances she wants to be alone, she’ll usually find herself walking on some trails in some wooded area, and if she can setting up camp with a fire and marshmallows and everything! Occasionally, she’ll invite her friends on an expedition with her for a little forest party!
  
• Children: She just likes making babies/little kids laugh! On the metro, she’s the only person who’d actually want to sit next to a baby just to make some weird faces and make the mother uncomfortable… April got her locks changed from a keypad to a slandered tumbler type just so she’d be able to carry keys with her.
  

DISLIKES

• Alcohol: She no longer trusts herself drinking. She’s totally fine if the people around her enjoy it, but she will abstain from it. At a bar, she’s the type to order a coke.
  
• Driving: Similarly to above, she doesn’t trust herself in a car anymore. April can drive and she does on occasion, but usually she tries to get rides from other people, bike, or walk wherever she needs to go. She does not own a car.
  
• The Undead: April has an unhealthy, irrational fear of zombies chasing her whenever she's at the bottom of a dark staircase. Similarly to sharks in the deep end of a pool. There's no way they’re there, but she’s still scared nonetheless.
  
• Cucumbers: They’re a flavorless, slimy, wedge of green her mom used to put in her water to make it ‘healthier’. She hates them.
  
• Fancy Shoes: April’s only insecurity is her really big feet. Though she’s short, she’s still a size 8.5 in womens. She prefers to wear big, bulky sneakers to hide this fact, but wearing heels makes it painfully obvious that she’s got flippers for feet. Plus, they never fit her right! She could rant about this all day.
  
• Baseball: It just… It just sucks.
  
• Buying anything more expensive than $20: She doesn’t have the largest paycheck in the world, so clothing, food, other items-- if they’re more than $20, she won’t buy them. Unless she absolutely has to. Most of her stuff is second hand.
  
• Bambi: The movie: She hasn’t seen it and she’s too afraid to watch it at this point…
  
  

PERSONALITY

April is what one would call an oddball. She presents herself as a goofy, fun loving person, and is pretty easy to spot in a crowd. She is definitely a patient person, and will wait as long as she needs to for near any task that she believes something will come out of. Holding onto the hope of something better to come is what gives her the ability to be so flexible in any situation. For the most part, April can cope with whatever hardship is thrown her way.

Due to her big heart and open mind, April was fully ready to become a teacher. Throughout her life, she's been one who takes pride in helping her former classmates and friends through things, and it's developed into a full-blown passion for teaching. Becoming an educator was her dream from a young age- but sadly, all attempts to fulfil her dream were shot down in an absolutely crushing rejection. While she did get over it, the denial of her one and only dream left her ultimately unsatisfied and a more than a little guilty.

There isn’t anything she can do but wish for things to be different. While she does share her more inconsequential thoughts and feelings freely, April is a very private person. She keeps her secrets and deeper problems to herself out of a mix of embarrassment and shame. It isn’t that she distrusts anyone. On the contrary, her trust comes as easily as her friendship. But there are some things she wishes to keep buried even from close friends. She may not be in a constant state of exuberance all the time, and there are cases where she tends to become a little snippy. Generally a very laid back individual, she isn’t one for perfect manners all the time, and in cases where April becomes upset or angry, she can become uncouth and frantic.

However, April tries her best to be happy whenever she can. But when she can’t, April does everything she can to keep the people around her happy! Usually, bringing a smile to someone’s face is enough to keep her going. Despite being a chatterbox herself, April is also able to listen carefully to other people’s problems, and can be surprisingly perceptive when someone tries to feed her lies. She will not have any of it! While she is more than a little nosy, and can sometimes be a little rude in searching for ways to help someone, she does have the best of intentions. Meddling in someone else’s life, even if her services are unwanted, is also very common for the young woman. Regardless of who or what she wants to help, April is genuinely interested in other people and their problems, and it’s often hard to stop her when she gets going.

Her ambition is what allows her to be strong and work hard on whatever she’s doing; whether it be listening to someone’s problems, walking a dog, or trying to make a pinterest craft- April will put her absolute everything into it. Her drive is admirable, however, there is a self-destructive aspect to it. Her selflessness tends to leave her exhausted and leaves her especially vulnerable to failure. April’s heart is in every single thing she does. She puts her soul into everyone she meets, devotes her life to the things she loves, and when things turn for the worst - it’s earth-shattering to her.

Overall, April is a very outgoing and cheerful person with an impulsive and quick-paced lifestyle. She lives day to day with not a care in a the world, and keeps herself accessible to anyone who may need her. She’s quite kind and ends up putting herself in uncomfortable situations as she can become a bit of a doormat just because she cares too much. Essentially, she’ll buy whatever anyone sells to her. April is desperate to help people achieve their goals in life and will do absolutely anything to ensure that other people ( and animals ) will remain happy. Even at the cost of her own time, minimal funds, and other resources. She will see the best in everything,

April may not get her dream, but that doesn’t mean other people can’t have theirs.

BIOGRAPHY

• Born in Chicago to mother Veronica Dawson & Commander Jackson Dawson (Military), Mother was from Printy County. Younger brother Benny (7) born when she was 16 to stepfather and firefighter Ryan Kelley (39).
  
• Parents divorced when she was 14
• Mother remarried and had Benny with her new husband. 
• Attended public schooling in Chicago. She had a gap year between senior year of highschool and college. She got her BA in Biology from Northwestern University, Illinois. Had a year of student teaching, before getting her teaching license.
  
• Age 18, just after graduating high school, April was arrested after hitting someone with her car while drunk and seriously injuring them. Received a permanent mark on her record, two weeks in a rehabilitation center. 
• Unable to find work due to her record, forced to move to Plox, living in her grandma’s old house.
• Started working random jobs, and eventually stuck with working at the shelter.
  
  

PERSONAL HISTORY

Born the only child of Veronica and Jackson Dawson, April’s life was set up to be supportive and empowering from the very start. Her mother, an author, and blogger, spent much of her time at home with baby April attending to her every need and kept her entertained with stories. Her father wasn’t home often, or for very long, but he too loved his daughter more than anything else in the world. Even if he missed much of her childhood, she was happy.

April Dawson was basically just born happy. That’s what her mother had always told her, anyway. “When you popped out, you were grinning ear to ear like you just knew what was going on,” Mrs. Dawson would tell her. And it was true; April was a very happy baby.

April’s very young life is entirely forgotten at this point, but, it was overall positive. She’d always been good at making friends and was a fairly independent kid. None of the first-day tears happened when she started pre-school, no holding onto her mommy and begging to go home; instead, she skipped straight in and started drawing with another toddler. Her mom cried in the car, but, April was fine.

There were no issues for her at school, as she’d always been popular! Her mother at this time was still a stay at home parent as her father’s military salary covered their large suburban Chicago house with enough to spare. Veronica Dawson, a small-time children’s book author, managed to earn a little extra with the books she’d written for her daughter, and she blogged about little April on the community’s website.

After moving to elementary school, little changed for April. She got good grades and had plenty of friends. Her mother stopped blogging about her- although, her short children’s books became full-fledged novels that did fairly well among teenagers. April didn’t care much for them, though.

From pigtails to braces, ponies to boybands-- Aside from general tastes, April didn’t change much as she aged. She was still surrounded by friends, and even if they changed she still liked them! There were the obvious bouts of insecurity that came with puberty, but nothing that stuck for long.

Veronica was pretty intolerant of any self-deprecation from her daughter, and if she ever caught her obsessing over anything; trends, being popular, etc, she’d tell her daughter she was perfect and everyone was just jealous like a mother should.

It worked, anyway, and April remained in high spirits throughout her tweens and early teens. Her grades, too, were solid and she held an interest in science from an early age. Whenever her classmates came for her to help she’d be ecstatic, thinking somehow she was more helpful than their teachers. Helping her friends understand things was fun for her, and on career day in 8th grade, she decided she’d just become a teacher.

Jackson and Veronica got a divorce between her 8th and 9th grade summer. She wasn’t too hurt by it since she didn’t see her father much as it was and her parents still maintained a healthy and friendly relationship. The distance between them just made it hard for them to stay in love. Veronica was also interested in another man, but Jackson didn’t seem to mind and April liked her mom's new boyfriend. She visits her father for half the summer and every other winter break.

High School was the same as her previous years, and April was doing well. Teachers liked her and she was in the school’s orchestra, playing Cello. She ended up in several clubs, too, where she managed to meet even more people. Part of her school’s GSA, Robotic, Botanical, and Chamber Orchestra clubs she’d also run for her sophomore year’s secretary position and won by a landslide. She was also on the girl’s lacrosse team as a midfielder and played as a setter for her junior year. Overall, very involved in almost every aspect of her high school's community!

Her mother and her new boyfriend had moved houses to one nearby- it was smaller than where she’d used to live but the yard was nicer, so it was a fair trade. Plus, Ryan ( Her mother’s boyfriend ) had a really cute dog.

Well-liked and popular in school, April had a good time. She never got in trouble, and while she attended parties she lacked the teenage rebellion to drink or try drugs. She got good grades in most of her classes with an A/B average, with a perfect record in her science courses.

Ryan and Veronica got married when she was 16 and soon her mother announced she was pregnant with another child and April couldn’t wait. While she’d miss being the only object of her mother’s attention, a little sibling seemed like fun!

April graduated highschool at the near top of her class. She was planning on attending Northwestern University, since she wanted to be close to her mom and it was a pretty decent school. There was no need for attending a fancy university when she wasn’t really planning on becoming a scientist or anything.

She was returning from a party thrown by her good friend when it happened. It was her last chance to be a “kid”, and a lapse in judgement ultimately led her to drinking. A factor that should be considered is the fact that April is a tiny woman, and the maybe two cups of beer, tequila shots, and the marijuana in the air clearly had her totally inebriated.

Now, April was fully aware that she shouldn’t be driving. Under no circumstances would she, unless she had to. And in her repressed state, her fight or flight response kicked into high gear when a drunk teenage boy attempted to get her alone. April was considered popular and reasonably attractive, so it wasn’t as if she’d never dated anyone, however she was still highly uncomfortable and booked it.

There were minimal issues until out of nowhere a man, walking home from his own late night of drinking, crossed directly in front of April’s car.

And she ran him over.

It was fast and she stopped as soon as she could have— he was in between street lights and far from any crosswalks, jaywalking right in front of her vehicle.

Luckily he wasn’t seriously injured— At the most, scrapes and bruises were forming along with a fractured leg and twisted ankle. April called the police and offered the man anything she could. She may have been legally very drunk, however, her head was somewhat clear by this point.

April left the accident scene with police, charged with: a DUI, Reckless Driving, Underage Drinking ( dropped due to first offense ), and was served with an additional civil lawsuit.

The trial was fairly short; April had done everything right after the scene and the fact the man crossed incorrectly was another way of alleviating her punishment. But, sadly, she still had her drivers license revoked for a year, had to attend a week of rehabilitation, and her family had to cover half the costs of the victims medical expenses. Generally, not a very harsh sentence despite April being charged as an adult.

Or, so she’d thought.

April took a gap year after accident, and attended Northwestern University in in her home state of illinois, ultimately getting her Bachelor's degree in biology. The subject ultimately wasn’t her favorite, but it was interesting enough to have her see it out to the degree. She’d never want to become a biologist— but a biology teacher? That sounded fine to her!

She took online courses in order to become a teacher, and had already started working minimum wage jobs so she could save up enough to find a place to live. April completed her training, and after her year of student teaching at a Chicago middle school she was ready!

All she had to do was find a school that was hiring— except, there was a complication. While not objectively banned, many schools will not hire teachers with criminal records. Since April had no references, no prior experience working full time, or any proof that she was safe to be around she was unable to get a job anywhere.

Her criminal record remains unsealed, sadly, as she was legally an adult at the time of the accident. The entire ordeal left her crushed.

After months of being unable to find work as a teacher anywhere, April fell into a deep depression and quit her current job as a waitress. She fell behind on rent, and ended up moving to Printy county with her grandmother (her mom and her step father offered to take her in but she was still ashamed of all the trouble she caused them).

She died pretty much as soon as April moved in with her, but at least she kept the apartment!

Her depression continued for a while longer, where she’d totally stopped taking any form of care of herself. April wasn’t bathing, eating, getting out of bed— she was essentially allowing herself to rot at her lowest point.

Most of her time was spent online just absorbing content without any meaning to her life until she eventually dug herself out of her mountain of self-pity through Oprah videos and comedy sketches. Also, the debts from her old apartment were still hanging over her head so she had to find work, and fast.

After bouncing around a few jobs— waitress, bike messenger, barista, and car wash operator, she landed her current job at an animal shelter! She’s been working there for roughly 2 months now, mostly walking dogs and cleaning kitty litter. Getting back out there and with people apparently boosted her self esteem enough for her to start living her life again, though, it's clear she isn't totally over it.

Mother married the wealthy Michael J. Marks (now Le-Marks) when he was 5 and they relocated to Phlox to live with him.
Went to school K-12 in Phlox Town, with his siblings, where he excelled; was not thrilled to be put up a grade (at first).
Graduated with honors and went off to the University of Washington on scholarship for a pre-med degree.
Generally did fine, finished up undergrad, and went on to graduate school where he’s been readjusting to his first year.
Upon being summoned back home at the behest of his mother in regards to the Gru invasion, he put his studies on hiatus and has returned to Printy County to be with his family.

From a very young age he knew he wasn’t female and his mother did what she could to help him, getting him hormone blockers until he was old enough to start testosterone despite protests from others telling her it was “just a phase”. It wasn’t easy scrounging up money for HRT but she always made things work if it was the best thing for her children.

Though their parents were never married their father still came around presumably to spend time with them. Unfortunately it became painfully clear that the man simply wanted to use them to his advantage rather than any real interest in bonding with his children. That was the start of Griffin’s desire for validation from his parents.

When he was about 5 years old his mother met Michael J. Marks, a decent man who she would end up marrying later in the year, subsequently relocating the family to Phlox Town where he lived. Michael was well meaning but strict and the triplets were used to listening to no one but each other and their mother so, needless to say, they butted heads quite a lot at first however the new safer environment meant there was more freedom for the children to play and soon they made friends with kids in the neighborhood. The first was a boy down the street named Royce-- their mother’s had been friends for a while and the children also hit it off shortly after meeting; the second was the son of the owner of a bakery they frequented. Things seemed to be going well around this time.

The start of schooling for Griffin was the beginning of change. He’d more or less always found solace in hanging around his siblings so the first time the teacher’s tried to put him up a grade he panicked, separation anxiety setting in almost immediately. The teacher’s acquiesced and left him alone but around 5th grade the differences he shared with his siblings became more and more apparent: his brother, Kennedy, found a passion in sports while his sister Artemis seemed the artsy type. Griffin found his niche in his studies, never bringing home anything short of A’s on his report card all the way up to senior year.
At first his parents praised him and encouraged him which he loved but the initial novelty of good grades wore off as he got into high school and the attention drifted to his other siblings; his stepfather seemed to have a preference for Artemis who was clearly a daddy’s girl and his mother, feeling bad about this, in turn showered Kennedy in attention leaving Griffin to be the awkward third wheel. He was always responsible and the least likely to get into trouble so his parents subconsciously left him to his own devices knowing he would make good decisions. The poor boy however didn’t see things this way and he tried harder and harder to garner his parents’ attention with his “success”.

By the time graduation came around the triplets were no longer as close as they once were, even going off to separate places to pursue their respective passions. Griffin, wanting to give his parents something to be proud of, went off to attend the University of Washington for a degree in science and medicine.

At first he thought the call about an “alien invasion” was just a joke but at urgency from his mother he came back to Printy County where he was surprised to see the news was true. Griffin isn’t sure how to feel about this but for the first time years it’s brought him and his siblings back together so at least that’s something; he’ll just have to wait it out and see what happens...

Was enrolled into ballet with his siblings for quite a while; he kept it up the longest.

He went through an embarrassing goth phase fairly recently (17) in which he got the majority of his piercings.
To be noted: He doesn’t typically wear all of his piercings at once (he’s past that stage); these days he wears the octopus gauges 98% of the time and the rest if he particularly wants to dress up. (A/N: I drew all of the piercings at once for future reference honestly...)

The dimple piercings were basically so that he could make dimples for himself because aren’t teenagers awfully impulsive or something?

Considering he’s always had an interest in possible life outside of earth the arrival of the Gru is equal parts exciting and frightening. If nothing else he’s thrilled that they have new technology to offer to the science and medical worlds.

For a while he went by just “Marks” or just “Le” because the kids in elementary school made jokes about the combination.

They have a really ugly chihuahua-chinese crested mix named Stinky and they all fight for his affections; mostly Stinky just wants food.

Recently bought a Gambian Pouched Rat as a pet. Her name is Chernobyl because someone told him rats shouldn’t be that big without radiation. He calls her Chery for short.

He does actually like children despite what people (for some reason?) think. They think his gauges are cool and it inflates his mildly insecure ego.

Growing up as the “oldest” of a set of triplets immediately seemed to thrust Griffin into the role of second parent; with their mother often gone at work, he had to make sure his brother and sister didn’t get into too much trouble doing whatever shenanigans they came up with (even if he was a participating member most of the time but you know how it is). These days he still subconsciously becomes “the mom friend” sometimes whether he realizes it or not. It’s not that he wants to be a killjoy, he is not in fact a robot and does get up to typical young adult activities, he’s just prone to thinking things through. Sometimes he overthinks but c’est la vie?

That being said he’s a very hardworking person whether it be in his studies/work or in social situations; Griffin can best be described as a people pleaser, he loves to make sure that others are happy and in fact has a bit of a hard time saying “no” when he should. His reasons are less about altruism and more about wanting to get recognition and praise for his actions. He not so subtly resents his siblings for seemingly having “natural talent” that people coo over whereas he’s stuck with the ability to do formulas no one really cares about. He strives to be the best at whatever he puts his mind to and that includes his interactions with others.

When you’ve gone all your life being referred to as “a prodigy” the moment you see a shortcoming in yourself it becomes more of a big deal than it should. He’s very finicky and self critical when it comes to his work, often analyzing projects and theories to the point of exhaustion. He feels threatened and a sense of inferiority towards those he deems “better than him” (not that he’ll make it readily apparent thank you) which in turn fuels his ambition. It sounds good in his head, having a goal means you’ll continue to strive for improvement but...he doesn’t really know when to stop. That’s part of the reason he judges people so quickly; if he can analyze their strengths and weaknesses he can use that to his advantage. Right?

BIOGRAPHY

• Born to Marianne Le-Marks and Robert Dansport along with his 2 siblings Artemis and Kennedy Le-Marks in a poor neighborhood in Larkspur.
• Mother married the wealthy Michael J. Marks (now Le-Marks) when he was 5 and they relocated to Phlox to live with him.
• Went to school K-12 in Phlox Town, with his siblings, where he excelled; was not thrilled to be put up a grade (at first).
• Graduated with honors and went off to the University of Washington on scholarship for a pre-med degree.
• Generally did fine, finished up undergrad, and went on to graduate school where he’s been readjusting to his first year.
• Upon being summoned back home at the behest of his mother in regards to the Gru invasion, he put his studies on hiatus and has returned to Printy County to be with his family.

Griffin Le was the first born of Marianne Le’s triplets in an older rather rundown, and frankly quite shady, neighborhood in Larkspur. His mother was an escort and thus often looked down upon by others, but she was a hardworking woman who juggled multiple jobs to pay the bills. She was gone often and as a result he quickly learned to take on the role of “second parent” for his siblings; in Griffin’s opinion? She should’ve earned mom of the year ten times over.

From a very young age he knew he wasn’t female and his mother did what she could to help him, getting him hormone blockers until he was old enough to start testosterone despite protests from others telling her it was “just a phase”. It wasn’t easy scrounging up money for HRT but she always made things work if it was the best thing for her children.

Though their parents were never married their father still came around presumably to spend time with them. Unfortunately it became painfully clear that the man simply wanted to use them to his advantage rather than any real interest in bonding with his children. That was the start of Griffin’s desire for validation from his parents.

When he was about 5 years old his mother met Michael J. Marks, a decent man who she would end up marrying later in the year, subsequently relocating the family to Phlox Town where he lived. Michael was well meaning but strict and the triplets were used to listening to no one but each other and their mother so, needless to say, they butted heads quite a lot at first however the new safer environment meant there was more freedom for the children to play and soon they made friends with kids in the neighborhood. The first was a boy down the street named Royce-- their mother’s had been friends for a while and the children also hit it off shortly after meeting; the second was the son of the owner of a bakery they frequented. Things seemed to be going well around this time.

The start of schooling for Griffin was the beginning of change. He’d more or less always found solace in hanging around his siblings so the first time the teacher’s tried to put him up a grade he panicked, separation anxiety setting in almost immediately. The teacher’s acquiesced and left him alone but around 5th grade the differences he shared with his siblings became more and more apparent: his brother, Kennedy, found a passion in sports while his sister Artemis seemed the artsy type. Griffin found his niche in his studies, never bringing home anything short of A’s on his report card all the way up to senior year.
At first his parents praised him and encouraged him which he loved but the initial novelty of good grades wore off as he got into high school and the attention drifted to his other siblings; his stepfather seemed to have a preference for Artemis who was clearly a daddy’s girl and his mother, feeling bad about this, in turn showered Kennedy in attention leaving Griffin to be the awkward third wheel. He was always responsible and the least likely to get into trouble so his parents subconsciously left him to his own devices knowing he would make good decisions. The poor boy however didn’t see things this way and he tried harder and harder to garner his parents’ attention with his “success”.

By the time graduation came around the triplets were no longer as close as they once were, even going off to separate places to pursue their respective passions. Griffin, wanting to give his parents something to be proud of, went off to attend the University of Washington for a degree in science and medicine.

At first he thought the call about an “alien invasion” was just a joke but at urgency from his mother he came back to Printy County where he was surprised to see the news was true. Griffin isn’t sure how to feel about this but for the first time years it’s brought him and his siblings back together so at least that’s something; he’ll just have to wait it out and see what happens...

• Was enrolled into ballet with his siblings for quite a while; he kept it up the longest.
• He went through an embarrassing goth phase fairly recently (17) in which he got the majority of his piercings.
• To be noted: He doesn’t typically wear all of his piercings at once (he’s past that stage); these days he wears the octopus gauges 98% of the time and the rest if he particularly wants to dress up. (A/N: I drew all of the piercings at once for future reference honestly...)
• The dimple piercings were basically so that he could make dimples for himself because aren’t teenagers awfully impulsive or something?
• Considering he’s always had an interest in possible life outside of earth the arrival of the Gru is equal parts exciting and frightening. If nothing else he’s thrilled that they have new technology to offer to the science and medical worlds.

• They have a really ugly chihuahua-chinese crested mix named Stinky and they all fight for his affections; mostly Stinky just wants food.
• Recently bought a Gambian Pouched Rat as a pet. Her name is Chernobyl because someone told him rats shouldn’t be that big without radiation. He calls her Chery for short.
• He does actually like children despite what people (for some reason?) think. They think his gauges are cool and it inflates his mildly insecure ego.

[li]Waiting in line. He likes getting things done right away so if he has to wait he gets irritated fast. Increased traffic in Larkspur has not helped him at all.[/li]

PERSONALITY

At first, Ethan usually gives off an unapproachable vibe, as he’s usually frowning with his arms crossed in from of him and often responds in short sentences. He also gets easily irritated by people who lack common sense or courtesy to others, and is quick to call people out on it. He's also very picky on food quality and doesn't finish food he dislikes, commenting about it with anyone he's eating with. But he doesn’t stay angry for long – he’s more focused on what he has to do for the day, especially during work.

When you catch him on break or off work, he likes to relax his mind and talk, preferably with drinks involved. He's pretty loud and rough sounding, but he likes making new friends, either by unloading about some stories from work or from the past, gossiping about news around town, and talking about his favorite things (especially food from the restaurant he works at). He likes messing with people, sometimes telling shocking stories to get a reaction from others, but in general he just tells funny stories and aims to have a good time with his friends. He also just uses some of these talk sessions to get some information on others. He believes in the power of networking, as getting to know people and keeping in touch has helped him with jobs, gigs, and even finding a place to stay when he needed it the most. He just advises others to do the same for themselves.

He tries to be light hearted in conversation in general, wanting to get along with others in most social situations. But he can get back to being serious when talking about the both the food and music industries (the latter especially). He doesn’t like people having fanciful dreams about them, and quick to deflate anyone’s ego if he believes that any aspiring chefs or musicians aren’t up to industry standard. But he isn’t going to discourage them from following their dreams – if they really believe that they want to pursue it, then they just have to figure out what’s hindering them from progressing, make sure they understand how to stay financially afloat, and then go for it. Though he tries to leave his involvement at just advice, he ends up getting drawn to certain talented individuals, and if they let him, he’ll help them out as best he can. He is a critical teacher, and he doesn’t accept slacking off from them. But expect him to be the most supportive and biggest cheerleader for anyone under his guidance.

Sometimes it seems like he can get too involved in people’s lives – even if their personality annoys him and if it gets in the way of his own work. And he does complain about his involvement at times to others. But with a good friend, he finds himself wanting to protect them to the point where he might do too much for them, especially with people he thinks have potential to succeed in their goals. If someone asks why he gets so involved - or any other personal questions, really - he gets defensive, leaves, and shuts people out for a while. And usually drinks. Binge drinking is his go to stress reliever. He usually then tries to ignore anyone who tries to bring up these questions and goes back to his normal work routine.


Deep down, though he would deny it, he just wants to have one successful band in his life. Even if he can’t travel out of the county, he misses the thrill of performing, being part of a team that was working together towards a common goal, and feels like he has failed his father, the one who introduced him to rock music in the first place. He believes as an adult nearing his thirties he should try to find stable work and have his own family, but the dream is still in his heart. It’s just the memories of his past bands and their sudden downfalls still hurt him, and he knows that he’s not as energetic or optimistic as he was before. So, unless by some miracle he finds the perfect set of band members…he’ll just accept his position as a normal member of society who sometimes lends a hand to others to live vicariously through their success.

Tl;dr : A man who struggles between accepting his adult life or striving for his childhood dreams.

• Aliens invade. Realizing he’s stuck in Printy County for a while, he moves out of his friend’s house to Larkspur to be closer to work.

PERSONAL HISTORY

For as long as Ethan remembered, he was surrounded by food. His parents started their sushi restaurant, Misora, when Ethan was young, and he had many memories going there when his older neighbors couldn’t look after him. His father was very particular with the fish and other ingredients that he used in his dishes, and his mother was a hospitable but honest-when-needed-to-be hostess. Although he was taught from a young age to cook in a similar fashion as his father, his parents often told him that they hoped Ethan would find his own path in life, as America was known as a land of many opportunities. His father especially believed in that, as he and his wife had left Japan to take advantage of a sushi craze that had swept parts of America during the 1980s and had found success here in their part of California.



As a child though, he didn’t really care too much about his future and was just a rowdy, mischievous kid. He just had way too much energy and nothing to focus it on, and he had too much fun pranking kids or roughhousing them. It got him to enough trouble that even his busy parents took notice and tried to get him into different extracurricular activities, but he would try to get out of it to hang out with his friends.



Said friends, though, had gotten interested in some popular rock bands at the time. They gave him some burnt CDs for him to listen to. He liked playing it in his room, when he didn’t want to listen to anyone (especially his baby sister crying). His mother disliked the music, which he expected – but his dad? He was listening once and his dad knocked on his door.



“Hey Ethan. Can you turn up the volume? I haven’t heard that song since you were a baby!”

It turned out that his dad was a fan of Western rock bands, but he had listened to it less because his wife didn’t like it playing in the house. Ethan was surprised but he found that it was nice to have something in common with his dad. When they had time, they bought some CDs and they would listen to it in a place far from mom and the other kids. He started to think that maybe he’d like to learn how to play music too and maybe one day be in a band. He joined his junior high and high school bands’ to learn and settled on percussion, hoping that he could be a band drummer one day. His dad encouraged his band dreams of course, as long as Ethan did his other responsibilities around the house and in the restaurant, and that he wouldn’t forget these practical things like cooking and cleaning for himself when he left the house. His mom, though not so eager to encourage her son into such an unstable career, was just happy that he wasn’t going to be a troublemaker for life.

He graduated and went to a local community college, scouting for people looking for drummers for their band while attending classes. It took him some time, but he found and successfully auditioned for a band that he wanted to be a part of. They got gigs locally and started to become semi-famous around the LA area. Around the time he finished up his associates degree, the band decided to go on their first tour. Though the drives were long, they had to set up their own equipment, and Ethan did a lot of management work (and cooking) than he expected, he was so happy to perform with his band. The adrenaline rush of performing for even small crowds excited him. He got to help with making music and hang out with the band over drinks when they had the chance.


Unfortunately, as it became more obvious that this band wasn’t going to make it big, the band started to fall apart. Ethan tried his best to motivate everyone to stick together, but in the end, the band broke up when its lead guitarist had to leave to take care of his ill mother on the other side of the country. Although Ethan was disappointed by what happened, he had anticipated their eventual break up and had been looking around for other jobs. Luckily a member of another band contacted them soon after his first band broke up, and he joined that band.


This new band showed much more promise. He was able to tour around the U.S., open for some of his favorite acts, produced some of their own independent CDs that actually sold out, even signed up for a promising label. Everything that Ethan had wanted was within his grasp. He could even send a CD of their band under an actual record label to his dad. However, he later found out the label went bankrupt before they were set to debut and had taken a lot of the money the band had earned with them. Everyone was shocked, but Ethan, facing failure again, was hurt the worst and drank heavily. His band mates separated soon after. Far from home and too broke to go back any time soon, he was forced to ask any nearby friends or acquaintances for any jobs or places he could stay for a while before he ran out of money to pay the motel that he was staying at temporarily.


It was about a month later, on his 28th birthday, when he got a notification from someone he hadn’t heard from in years – a guy named Max, the guitarist from his first band who had left to take care of his mother. Besides greeting Ethan, he also knew about Ethan's situation through another old band member and said he’d like to take him in for a while as long as he didn’t cause any trouble for Max and his family. Max lived in a town called Phlox, some quiet suburb that was about a couple hours from where he was. Not having many options, he took Max’s offer and moved in with him. Wanting to stay away from the music business for a while, he got a job at a diner in Larkspur City called The Waffle Hop through Max’s older sister, who was the head cook over there.


Although him ending up as a server and a prep cook at a small diner was not what Ethan envisioned himself doing…after the instability of his life for the last eight years, the routine of driving to a job, doing and getting paid to do simple work, and coming back to a family (even if it wasn’t his own) soothed him, to his surprise. On his days off, he went out to explore the county and eventually made some friends in both Phlox and Larkspur. After a while, he started thinking that he might actually want to stay here after he made enough money to move out of Max's house. Printy County wasn't as crowded or expensive as living in California and from observing Max's family, it was a nice place to raise some kids someday. The only thing that was stopping him was the memories of his bands, the good ones, and the hope that maybe even in this place he could start a new band…but he couldn’t see himself doing that soon.


With him taking a lot of overtime, he was able to save enough money to possibly move out or maybe visit his family back home. While he was working a night shift at the diner, however, the aliens arrived. He was surprised as anyone else. And while the technological and medical advancements were nice, he didn't feel right when the aliens started taking over some of the buildings - Sky Hall especially (where was he gonna watch drinks and watch bands now?) and causing traffic. What really got to him was him sprouting wings that could glow and everyone else Changing. The aliens probably had something to do with it, and weren't saying why or how to even stifle these powers. But for now, he doesn’t feel the need to act against the aliens. He just lives his ordinary life, commuting from Phlox, working, and occasionally hanging out with friends while dreaming of his old life. But he's currently looking for an apartment in Larkspur to move into just so he doesn't have to fight through traffic every day....

• He paid half his rent to his friend in money, and the rest in cooking dinner/bringing back diner leftovers. Max and his wife are not great cooks, so it worked out.
• He's not fond of most Printy County restaurants he's been to - except for the place he works at.
  Before he got interviewed, he went there as a customer, with low expectations based on the restaurants Max had taken him to previously. He had their specialty waffles...and was amazed at the quality. He is now The Waffle Hop's biggest promoter (as long as his boss, the head cook/Max's sister Clair is not around. She's threatened to fire him if he does.)
• Has only been in Printy County for a year. Despite wanting to live one of Printy's towns (or city), he misses home and his dad's cooking a lot.
• His parents begged him to come home after the band break up, but Ethan was ashamed that he wasn't coming home successful and didn't want to use his parents' money to go home. Eventually he liked the place, but he still wants to visit. He does Skype his parents and his younger sister (who lives with them still) about once a week.
• Owns a used Civic Accord to get to and from work. It's been stolen once.
• Carries a special sent of kitchen utensils that were parting gift from his dad when he first started touring. He treasures them, especially the largest knife. He even it named it Moonlight. No one is allowed to touch that knife but him.
• Has the nickname ‘Mr. Snowman’, based off the characters that make up his middle name. When he explained the meaning of his middle name to some friends in high school, they started calling him that nickname and it stuck with him. He thought it was stupid back then, but he’s embraced it these days and uses it for his online screennames.
• Can speak conversational Japanese. Can only read hiragana, katakana and some kanji for food. His parents tried to get him into Japanese language school but quit before he got into middle school. He regrets it now.
• Currently has three tattoos. The first one is on his right collarbone has the quote ‘Know yourself’, his motto. The second one on his upper right arm of a black butterfly. The last one, on his upper left arm, has a koi fish going up a waterfall. His parents were uncomfortable with them at first but have gotten used to it since they can't control their son from far away.
• Ethan's second band posted some of their music on Youtube, but none of it was very popular. He wouldn't link it, but he does talk about his time in his bands often so he isn't surprised if people show him the band videos. He doesn't like talking about whey they didn't work out though.

The only thing that’s stopping him from drinking more is that he doesn't want to drink at his friend's place with a child around.
• Financial security. Money keeps people safe and is the secret to happiness, and when you’re struggling to pay rent, safe investments mean everything so the cash spent isn’t wasted.
• Talented people. Like with food, he has high standards, but when he sees someone that has real talent in – something – he’s inspired.
• Sentai shows (i.e. Super Sentai, Power Rangers, Kamen Rider, etc). He’s liked it as a kid and he still likes it as a grown adult. The majority of his toys and figures are at home, but he bought a red scarf for himself as a homage to the original Kamen Rider that he wears when it’s cold, as well as a figurine and a belt buckle
• Cheesecake. He's picky about most food, but he'll eat it. But if you show him cheesecake, he will usually turn it down, try to get away - but then come back and ask for some. He loves cheesecake and can eat two whole cakes of them in one sitting (and regret it later). You can't bribe him to do anything for it but...he will like you a lot if you give him/make him a good cheesecake.
• Alternative rock - Well, he likes most kinds of music, but his favorite bands are from the late 80s-early 90s era when alternative was in its heyday.

DISLIKES

• Birds. Their poop is really hard to clean off his car. They should also stop pooping on him too.
• As said before, bad cooking, but especially if it’s from a restaurant. If he has to pay for it, it better be good.
• People who give up on themselves too easily. He can overlook certain circumstances, but basically he believes if you’re alive and you have some goal to accomplish, no matter what kind of crap you have in your life, you can keep working toward your goal and you could be successful one day. He might just not like the negativity in his life, too.
• Surprises. They are usually not good in his experience. Even if the intention is good it messes up his focus.
• Waiting in line. He likes getting things done right away so if he has to wait he gets irritated fast. Increased traffic in Larkspur has not helped him at all.
• WASTEFUL SPENDING.
• People who disobey simple traffic safety laws. Don’t jaywalk, follow the traffic signals, don’t cut him in line, don’t go over the traffic limit, and DON’T GO SLOWER THAN 60 MILES AN HOUR ON THE FREEWAY.
• People who tell him to stop cussing so much. They should fuck off.

PERSONALITY

At first, Ethan usually gives off an unapproachable vibe, as he’s usually frowning with his arms crossed in from of him and often responds in short sentences. He also gets easily irritated by people who lack common sense or courtesy to others, and is quick to call people out on it. He's also very picky on food quality and doesn't finish food he dislikes, commenting about it with anyone he's eating with. But he doesn’t stay angry for long – he’s more focused on what he has to do for the day, especially during work.

When you catch him on break or off work, he likes to relax his mind and talk, preferably with drinks involved. He's pretty loud and rough sounding, but he likes making new friends, either by unloading about some stories from work or from the past, gossiping about news around town, and talking about his favorite things (especially food from the restaurant he works at). He likes messing with people, sometimes telling shocking stories to get a reaction from others, but in general he just tells funny stories and aims to have a good time with his friends. He also just uses some of these talk sessions to get some information on others. He believes in the power of networking, as getting to know people and keeping in touch has helped him with jobs, gigs, and even finding a place to stay when he needed it the most. He just advises others to do the same for themselves.

He tries to be light hearted in conversation in general, wanting to get along with others in most social situations. But he can get back to being serious when talking about the both the food and music industries (the latter especially). He doesn’t like people having fanciful dreams about them, and quick to deflate anyone’s ego if he believes that any aspiring chefs or musicians aren’t up to industry standard. But he isn’t going to discourage them from following their dreams – if they really believe that they want to pursue it, then they just have to figure out what’s hindering them from progressing, make sure they understand how to stay financially afloat, and then go for it. Though he tries to leave his involvement at just advice, he ends up getting drawn to certain talented individuals, and if they let him, he’ll help them out as best he can. He is a critical teacher, and he doesn’t accept slacking off from them. But expect him to be the most supportive and biggest cheerleader for anyone under his guidance.

Sometimes it seems like he can get too involved in people’s lives – even if their personality annoys him and if it gets in the way of his own work. And he does complain about his involvement at times to others. But with a good friend, he finds himself wanting to protect them to the point where he might do too much for them, especially with people he thinks have potential to succeed in their goals. If someone asks why he gets so involved - or any other personal questions, really - he gets defensive, leaves, and shuts people out for a while. And usually drinks. Binge drinking is his go to stress reliever. He usually then tries to ignore anyone who tries to bring up these questions and goes back to his normal work routine.


Deep down, though he would deny it, he just wants to have one successful band in his life. Even if he can’t travel out of the county, he misses the thrill of performing, being part of a team that was working together towards a common goal, and feels like he has failed his father, the one who introduced him to rock music in the first place. He believes as an adult nearing his thirties he should try to find stable work and have his own family, but the dream is still in his heart. It’s just the memories of his past bands and their sudden downfalls still hurt him, and he knows that he’s not as energetic or optimistic as he was before. So, unless by some miracle he finds the perfect set of band members…he’ll just accept his position as a normal member of society who sometimes lends a hand to others to live vicariously through their success.

Tl;dr : A man who struggles between accepting his adult life or striving for his childhood dreams.

PERSONAL HISTORY

For as long as Ethan remembered, he was surrounded by food. His parents started their sushi restaurant, Misora, when Ethan was young, and he had many memories going there when his older neighbors couldn’t look after him. His father was very particular with the fish and other ingredients that he used in his dishes, and his mother was a hospitable but honest-when-needed-to-be hostess. Although he was taught from a young age to cook in a similar fashion as his father, his parents often told him that they hoped Ethan would find his own path in life, as America was known as a land of many opportunities. His father especially believed in that, as he and his wife had left Japan to take advantage of a sushi craze that had swept parts of America during the 1980s and had found success here in their part of California.

As a child though, he didn’t really care too much about his future and was just a rowdy, mischievous kid. He just had way too much energy and nothing to focus it on, and he had too much fun pranking kids or roughhousing them. It got him to enough trouble that even his busy parents took notice and tried to get him into different extracurricular activities, but he would try to get out of it to hang out with his friends.

Said friends, though, had gotten interested in some popular rock bands at the time. They gave him some burnt CDs for him to listen to. He liked playing it in his room, when he didn’t want to listen to anyone (especially his baby sister crying). His mother disliked the music, which he expected – but his dad? He was listening once and his dad knocked on his door.

“Hey Ethan. Can you turn up the volume? I haven’t heard that song since you were a baby!”

It turned out that his dad was a fan of Western rock bands, but he had listened to it less because his wife didn’t like it playing in the house. Ethan was surprised but he found that it was nice to have something in common with his dad. When they had time, they bought some CDs and they would listen to it in a place far from mom and the other kids. He started to think that maybe he’d like to learn how to play music too and maybe one day be in a band. He joined his junior high and high school bands’ to learn and settled on percussion, hoping that he could be a band drummer one day. His dad encouraged his band dreams of course, as long as Ethan did his other responsibilities around the house and in the restaurant, and that he wouldn’t forget these practical things like cooking and cleaning for himself when he left the house. His mom, though not so eager to encourage her son into such an unstable career, was just happy that he wasn’t going to be a troublemaker for life.

He graduated and went to a local community college, scouting for people looking for drummers for their band while attending classes. It took him some time, but he found and successfully auditioned for a band that he wanted to be a part of. They got gigs locally and started to become semi-famous around the LA area. Around the time he finished up his associates degree, the band decided to go on their first tour. Though the drives were long, they had to set up their own equipment, and Ethan did a lot of management work (and cooking) than he expected, he was so happy to perform with his band. The adrenaline rush of performing for even small crowds excited him. He got to help with making music and hang out with the band over drinks when they had the chance.

Unfortunately, as it became more obvious that this band wasn’t going to make it big, the band started to fall apart. Ethan tried his best to motivate everyone to stick together, but in the end, the band broke up when its lead guitarist had to leave to take care of his ill mother on the other side of the country. Although Ethan was disappointed by what happened, he had anticipated their eventual break up and had been looking around for other jobs. Luckily a member of another band contacted them soon after his first band broke up, and he joined that band.

This new band showed much more promise. He was able to tour around the U.S., open for some of his favorite acts, produced some of their own independent CDs that actually sold out, even signed up for a promising label. Everything that Ethan had wanted was within his grasp. He could even send a CD of their band under an actual record label to his dad. However, he later found out the label went bankrupt before they were set to debut and had taken a lot of the money the band had earned with them. Everyone was shocked, but Ethan, facing failure again, was hurt the worst and drank heavily. His band mates separated soon after. Far from home and too broke to go back any time soon, he was forced to ask any nearby friends or acquaintances for any jobs or places he could stay for a while before he ran out of money to pay the motel that he was staying at temporarily.

It was about a month later, on his 28th birthday, when he got a notification from someone he hadn’t heard from in years – a guy named Max, the guitarist from his first band who had left to take care of his mother. Besides greeting Ethan, he also knew about Ethan's situation through another old band member and said he’d like to take him in for a while as long as he didn’t cause any trouble for Max and his family. Max lived in a town called Phlox, some quiet suburb that was about a couple hours from where he was. Not having many options, he took Max’s offer and moved in with him. Wanting to stay away from the music business for a while, he got a job at a diner in Larkspur City called The Waffle Hop through Max’s older sister, who was the head cook over there.

Although him ending up as a server and a prep cook at a small diner was not what Ethan envisioned himself doing…after the instability of his life for the last eight years, the routine of driving to a job, doing and getting paid to do simple work, and coming back to a family (even if it wasn’t his own) soothed him, to his surprise. On his days off, he went out to explore the county and eventually made some friends in both Phlox and Larkspur. After a while, he started thinking that he might actually want to stay here after he made enough money to move out of Max's house. Printy County wasn't as crowded or expensive as living in California and from observing Max's family, it was a nice place to raise some kids someday. The only thing that was stopping him was the memories of his bands, the good ones, and the hope that maybe even in this place he could start a new band…but he couldn’t see himself doing that soon.

With him taking a lot of overtime, he was able to save enough money to possibly move out or maybe visit his family back home. While he was working a night shift at the diner, however, the aliens arrived. He was surprised as anyone else. And while the technological and medical advancements were nice, he didn't feel right when the aliens started taking over some of the buildings - Sky Hall especially (where was he gonna watch drinks and watch bands now?) and causing traffic. What really got to him was him sprouting wings that could glow and everyone else Changing. The aliens probably had something to do with it, and weren't saying why or how to even stifle these powers. But for now, he doesn’t feel the need to act against the aliens. He just lives his ordinary life, commuting from Phlox, working, and occasionally hanging out with friends while dreaming of his old life. But he's currently looking for an apartment in Larkspur to move into just so he doesn't have to fight through traffic every day....

there is something poignant about a freight train speeding far faster than its limit.

This sharp tongued, sharp eyed youth takes no prisoners and leaves few survivors. Upon meeting someone new, Lee is able to make immediate (biased) snap judgements of their character. This is due to his competitive nature, wherein he feels he must be better than everyone else in every conceivable way, or else he’s failed as a person. He’s easily riled up; if he feels inferior to someone, somehow, he becomes doggedly focused on “beating” them, whether it be in grades or “amount of time spent doing a headstand”.
Thus, when Lee meets someone for the first time, he takes a moment to assess the assets they have, their intelligence, and achievements under the guise of camaraderie. If he deems his accompaniment as a “non-threat” (which he is likely to do, because— well— it’s oh so incredibly hard to be better than he is, in any way—), he reverts to treating them with, (depending on their predicted use to him), either an unconcerned aloofness, or a general friendly enthusiasm. It’s enough for those who don’t know him quite well to say, “Oh...he’s nice, I guess,” and move on.

Little do they know: despite the amiable overtones Lee carries with him, his judgemental side shows itself more often than not. He says what he thinks without hesitation or fear— and boy, does Lee think a lot. This can be helpful in a situation where an assertive attitude is needed, but seeing as Lee doesn’t particularly take others’ feelings into consideration when he speaks… could make for something more chaotic.
Lee loves to show off, not just his appearance, but rather, his actions and achievements. Ambition is his main drive; once he decides to do something, he’ll follow through 200%. Anything he sets his mind to, he must succeed in. Lee puts immense pressure on himself to thrive, and refuses to take no for an answer when the subject at hand involves his accomplishments. When he sets his sight on a goal, he forgets everything around him, and charges forward without a second thought, bulldozing ahead with no regard for anyone’s safety.

In his heart of hearts, Lee has the inkling of an idea that his skewed idea of victory is incorrect and unhealthy, but he craves praise and validation to the point where he ends up hurting others to get what he wants. However, he is currently unwilling to admit this to himself.

  Born to Dae Hyun (43) and Min (40), South Korean immigrants. They are now the eldest out of three children: Hei Ran (15), and In Su (12).
  Grows up in Tenafly, NJ. Parents invest in various extracurriculars for Lee, who attends all of them dutifully up to age eight (8).
  Drops all their other extracurriculars due to the debt their parents have accumulated when having their second and third child.
  Tries out for middle school track at age eleven (11), finds they enjoy running immensely.
  Runs all the way to varsity; makes sure to keep his grades up so they can get into a good college. Juggles a few part time jobs to help pay expenses.
  Acceptance results are in— with a catch. Though Lee gets into some of their first choice schools, they aren’t offered a high enough scholarship that would allow Lee’s parents to support him while also saving enough for his little siblings.
  KBU, however, is one of the only universities that grants Lee a full track and field scholarship— since Lee’s cousins also reside there, it’s decided that he attend KBU instead of his first choices so the family can save money on both board and education.
  The summer afterwards, they move in with their cousins, the Hwangs, who reside in a one story home located in Phlox Town.

PERSONAL HISTORY

He was born with a baton in his hand; the hopes and dreams of those who sacrificed everything to wade in unfamiliar waters.

He spends his childhood trying to make up the debt he owes to his parents. “For bringing you into the world,” they had stated— not with malice; it is simply a common fact, one that Lee adheres to for his whole life. Their sacrifice must be worth it, he must make it worthwhile. He’s a good boy, a perfect child, a prodigy skilled at most anything he does. Of course... it's easy to impress when you do anything as a six year old; show a little promise and they'll call you a genius.
And “genius” is the word he repeats to himself when he dances/practices/studies—
—because he can't be anything less than that. He refuses to be anything less than that. The only thing he yearns for is the pat on the head and the elation he feels when his father's features warm,
“I suppose… you might be something special after all.”
But he learns quickly that such joy is short-lived. One slip of the leg/hand/mind and he's met with a disapproving stare, a tired sigh, and fingers pinching the bridge of a nose. They don't have to say anything for him to know he's failed.

He’ll repeat that feeling many times in his younger years. The arrival of his siblings doesn’t lessen the burden; rather, their presence merely makes the baton Lee carries multiply in weight. He has to be a good example for them, has to pick up the pace even when money’s tight. He drops his extracurriculars due to money constraints, but keeps striding forward as best he can… Nevertheless, a child is still a child at the end of the day. When his mother rests a hand on his shoulder, Lee feels his burdens multiply; he loves her so much— but this love— oh, this love is strangling him from the inside out.

So sometimes, when he manages to clear a sliver of time from his plate, Lee slips out of the house, and just… runs. He runs straight ahead, for as far as he wants, for as long as he can. He runs until his breath comes in ragged bursts and his throat shudders with iron in each exhale. He runs until he can’t see his house in the distance, until he can barely see anything familiar to him, until he can almost, almost, forget.

And then he walks back home, like nothing happened.

Joining track in middle school is plenty easy (after reassuring his parents his grades won’t drop), but to the surprise of his parents, Lee is actually good at the sport. Good enough that they can brag about him— he’s won first place in the city, the county, the state—, good enough that he slides himself into varsity as soon as high school rolls around. And soon, being first in the state isn’t good enough for Lee. He has to aim higher. The nation, the world; he’ll outrun them all.

As it turns out, however, his family’s financial situation is worse than he’d thought. After sophomore year hits, Lee is forced to tone down his school activities and pick up a few part time jobs to help his dad make ends meet. He doesn’t quit track, but his sports career ends up taking a backseat in exchange for being able to feed his siblings and pay for living expenses.

So when Lee applies to college in the winter of senior year, he’s barely special on paper. Anyone can get good grades if they try hard enough, and though his essay is about his passion for track, the only outstanding records in his application are dated to freshman year. Unsurprisingly, when results are announced, Lee’s choices are limited, and his need for financial aid and a scholarship make his dream school obsolete. It’s almost decided that Lee will simply attend community college— until he gets an email from Kyles Briggs University.

He’d applied there on the insistence of his mother— apparently, her cousins (his uncles and aunt), live in Printy County, and she’d thought it might be nice for him to stay with them. He’d laughed at the idea at the time… but in the end, it seemed the most prudent choice. KBU offers Lee a full scholarship. Someone out there has decided to give Lee a chance— and he takes it.
Lee moves to Phlox Town the summer after he graduates high school. His uncles are both a bit eccentric, and his aunt is the only one sane enough to carry a conversation with, so he generally keeps to himself around his new “home”. Lee works hard to keep his grades up at KBU, and finds joy in running track, quickly making a name for himself as a strong contestant in competitions. Printy County isn’t exactly the place he’d imagined for himself… but it’s all he’s got. He’s going to make the most of it, and he’s going to win.
When the aliens arrive, after the initial surprise, Lee finds that he can literally care less. Unless they intrude on his desires to be number one, he has practically zero interest in them. The mutations take a little longer to get used to... but in the end, they’re neither harmful nor beneficial to him, so Lee simply ignores them.

there is something poignant about a freight train speeding far faster than its limit.

This sharp tongued, sharp eyed youth takes no prisoners and leaves few survivors. Upon meeting someone new, Lee is able to make immediate (biased) snap judgements of their character. This is due to his competitive nature, wherein he feels he must be better than everyone else in every conceivable way, or else he’s failed as a person. He’s easily riled up; if he feels inferior to someone, somehow, he becomes doggedly focused on “beating” them, whether it be in grades or “amount of time spent doing a headstand”.
Thus, when Lee meets someone for the first time, he takes a moment to assess the assets they have, their intelligence, and achievements under the guise of camaraderie. If he deems his accompaniment as a “non-threat” (which he is likely to do, because— well— it’s oh so incredibly hard to be better than he is, in any way—), he reverts to treating them with, (depending on their predicted use to him), either an unconcerned aloofness, or a general friendly enthusiasm. It’s enough for those who don’t know him quite well to say, “Oh...he’s nice, I guess,” and move on.

Little do they know: despite the amiable overtones Lee carries with him, his judgemental side shows itself more often than not. He says what he thinks without hesitation or fear— and boy, does Lee think a lot. This can be helpful in a situation where an assertive attitude is needed, but seeing as Lee doesn’t particularly take others’ feelings into consideration when he speaks… could make for something more chaotic.
Lee loves to show off, not just his appearance, but rather, his actions and achievements. Ambition is his main drive; once he decides to do something, he’ll follow through 200%. Anything he sets his mind to, he must succeed in. Lee puts immense pressure on himself to thrive, and refuses to take no for an answer when the subject at hand involves his accomplishments. When he sets his sight on a goal, he forgets everything around him, and charges forward without a second thought, bulldozing ahead with no regard for anyone’s safety.

In his heart of hearts, Lee has the inkling of an idea that his skewed idea of victory is incorrect and unhealthy, but he craves praise and validation to the point where he ends up hurting others to get what he wants. However, he is currently unwilling to admit this to himself.

Without the pressure of success weighted on his back, Lee is more ordinary than one would think. He is diligent and cares for his close friends and family; when he makes a promise, he’ll absolutely keep his word. Although it is rare for Lee to volunteer himself for something that won’t give him the upper hand, when he agrees to do something, he will do it incredibly well, pulling out all the stops for a bit of praise. He’s completely honest with his peers, and the candor that rests upon his lips works well in witty banter. He enjoys taking risks and having them pay off, trying new things just to feel his chest soar—(a rollercoaster of blessed, breathing air)— When his heart is not soaked in a stranger’s eulogy, he is something that wants to become the wind itself.

PERSONAL HISTORY

He was born with a baton in his hand; the hopes and dreams of those who sacrificed everything to wade in unfamiliar waters.

He spends his childhood trying to make up the debt he owes to his parents. “For bringing you into the world,” they had stated— not with malice; it is simply a common fact, one that Lee adheres to for his whole life. Their sacrifice must be worth it, he must make it worthwhile. He’s a good boy, a perfect child, a prodigy skilled at most anything he does. Of course... it's easy to impress when you do anything as a six year old; show a little promise and they'll call you a genius.
And “genius” is the word he repeats to himself when he dances/practices/studies—
—because he can't be anything less than that. He refuses to be anything less than that. The only thing he yearns for is the pat on the head and the elation he feels when his father's features warm,
“I suppose… you might be something special after all.”
But he learns quickly that such joy is short-lived. One slip of the leg/hand/mind and he's met with a disapproving stare, a tired sigh, and fingers pinching the bridge of a nose. They don't have to say anything for him to know he's failed.

He’ll repeat that feeling many times in his younger years. The arrival of his siblings doesn’t lessen the burden; rather, their presence merely makes the baton Lee carries multiply in weight. He has to be a good example for them, has to pick up the pace even when money’s tight. He drops his extracurriculars due to money constraints, but keeps striding forward as best he can… Nevertheless, a child is still a child at the end of the day. When his mother rests a hand on his shoulder, Lee feels his burdens multiply; he loves her so much— but this love— oh, this love is strangling him from the inside out.

So sometimes, when he manages to clear a sliver of time from his plate, Lee slips out of the house, and just… runs. He runs straight ahead, for as far as he wants, for as long as he can. He runs until his breath comes in ragged bursts and his throat shudders with iron in each exhale. He runs until he can’t see his house in the distance, until he can barely see anything familiar to him, until he can almost, almost, forget.

And then he walks back home, like nothing happened.

Joining track in middle school is plenty easy (after reassuring his parents his grades won’t drop), but to the surprise of his parents, Lee is actually good at the sport. Good enough that they can brag about him— he’s won first place in the city, the county, the state—, good enough that he slides himself into varsity as soon as high school rolls around. And soon, being first in the state isn’t good enough for Lee. He has to aim higher. The nation, the world; he’ll outrun them all.

As it turns out, however, his family’s financial situation is worse than he’d thought. After sophomore year hits, Lee is forced to tone down his school activities and pick up a few part time jobs to help his dad make ends meet. He doesn’t quit track, but his sports career ends up taking a backseat in exchange for being able to feed his siblings and pay for living expenses.

So when Lee applies to college in the winter of senior year, he’s barely special on paper. Anyone can get good grades if they try hard enough, and though his essay is about his passion for track, the only outstanding records in his application are dated to freshman year. Unsurprisingly, when results are announced, Lee’s choices are limited, and his need for financial aid and a scholarship make his dream school obsolete. It’s almost decided that Lee will simply attend community college— until he gets an email from Kyles Briggs University.

He’d applied there on the insistence of his mother— apparently, her cousins (his uncles and aunt), live in Printy County, and she’d thought it might be nice for him to stay with them. He’d laughed at the idea at the time… but in the end, it seemed the most prudent choice. KBU offers Lee a full scholarship. Someone out there has decided to give Lee a chance— and he takes it.
Lee moves to Phlox Town the summer after he graduates high school. His uncles are both a bit eccentric, and his aunt is the only one sane enough to carry a conversation with, so he generally keeps to himself around his new “home”. Lee works hard to keep his grades up at KBU, and finds joy in running track, quickly making a name for himself as a strong contestant in competitions. Printy County isn’t exactly the place he’d imagined for himself… but it’s all he’s got. He’s going to make the most of it, and he’s going to win.
When the aliens arrive, after the initial surprise, Lee finds that he can literally care less. Unless they intrude on his desires to be number one, he has practically zero interest in them. The mutations take a little longer to get used to... but in the end, they’re neither harmful nor beneficial to him, so Lee simply ignores them.
