“Say I'm thinkin' about retirin', they send me to fight aliens... great.”NAME
Charles (Charlie) Eqqin Jr. (Gunspit)AGE
55GENDER
MaleBIRTH DATE
December 29th 1962OCCUPATION
Federal AgentLIKES
- M*A*S*H, Gunsmoke, and Mary Tyler Moore are all shows he grew up with, and still loves; he rarely uses his Hooloo account to watch anything else.
- Beer or scotch; it either needs to run plentiful, or run strong. Doesn't drink that much anymore, but the aliens may reinvigorate the habit.
- Board games are a simple but engaging joy; Monopoly is too complex, but Apologies!, Jengo, or Mancala are nice ways to wind down at the end of the day.
- Cooperative people who have no qualms turning over information are a blessing.
- Microwaves are a miracle of science, and he is constantly amazed by the things that can be done with them now that he lacks a stove; from mac and cheese, to eggs, to cake, his whole world is opening up.
- Desperately loves, and misses, all of his guns. He brought four, and they've all be stripped from him; he's had to take to learning to improvise weapons for himself.
- Despite his family's history, he finds no shame in them, and rather radiates a fierce pride in his ancestors who lived solely by their own means.
DISLIKES
- Charles is his father; if having to go by a first name, he prefers Charlie.
- Taxis were always a pain in cities before this, but Printy's are possibly even worse; the mere idea of having to go into Larkspur by vehicle gives him a looming feeling of acid reflux coming on.
- Learning to read later in life still has its effects on him as an adult; he struggles with long-format text, and will take audio over it whenever he can. Generally stays away from books, and often even the newspaper. Tends to dictate all of his reports.
- The smartphone in his pocket sees only, and exclusively, use as a phone; any other aspect of it is entirely beyond him.
- All those goddamn aliens can burn in hell.
PERSONALITYNo-nonsense and with a strong sense of justice, Charlie Eqqin holds a firm moral code and sense of self-assurance that has carried him through life without a great deal of strife. He knows his capabilities, and his weaknesses, and has lived long enough to be comfortable with them; with a very hardened exterior, he's difficult to embarrass or fluster, and takes things in stride. Having a lot under his belt that he's seen and experienced, anything that surprises him anymore is less surprising as much as it is tiring.
He's had his run of careless freedom, and his only interests are in getting his job done and going home at the end of the day, citing he doesn't have the energy enough left to deal with anything else, especially lately; he's easily drained and easily frustrated when things don't go according to plan, leading him into a drastic impatience as a result of those frustrations becoming long-standing. He can be short and snappy in interactions even with good intentions, and despite his assurance, he isn't always the most self-aware enough to know when he's coming off strongly.
Talking to him about it doesn't help much, though; he isn't the least bit sensitive, and emotional matters often go right over his head; he can't get a grip on the concept that others can't control their feelings, and that it isn't something they can help--a trait brought on by the discouragement of his own emotional expression as a child. He can't bring himself to see it as a flaw in himself, considering it was something he was raised to instead value, and is long too set in his ways to try and think beyond that.
That stubbornness transcends to other aspects of his life, too; he doesn't take well to being told what to do (outside of his superiors), and it's incredibly hard to change his mind once he's set in a decision. It's stemmed from his very hardened moral code and sense of justice--he has a very clear picture of right and wrong, and needs a good argument given before he'll willingly go against that. It's gotten him in a great deal of trouble in the past, though, which is what now keeps his head down and his mouth shut in regards to orders he's given; but it isn't repressed entirely.
When engaged in casual situations, though, he comes off to be very laid back and not adverse to conversation; though brief in his words, he'll usually give someone the time of day, and is a good ear for anyone who needs to just talk. He gets protective over people very quickly, either out of a sense of duty or a small soft spot for kids; he can be innocent at heart, and it's easy for him to click with them--just don't tell his coworkers.BIOGRAPHY
- Born and raised outside of Ajo Arizona; mother died young, primarily raised by his father, Charles Sr..
- Left home at age 8 to be the first in his family to receive an education, sponsored by a politician and his family; became independent and started working at 16 while finishing high school. Took two years after to work, before going back to school for a Bachelor's in Forensic Science, later moving onto attend a Police Academy. Worked as a detective until he was 35.
- Applied for a position within the Federal Bureau of Investigation; despite some bumps in his background check due to his undocumented family history, the remainder of his interviews and his physical assessment went fine, later leading him into the FBI Academy, after which he would enter force as a full-fledged agent for the next 20 years.
- Currently residing in Printy County, in a motel at the edge of Phlox investigating the aliens as his last assignment before he retires.
PERSONAL HISTORYThe Arizona desert was big, dry, and lonely--but that was alright, because Charlie only needed his Pa. They had a couple of neighbors, some other cattle ranchers about a mile down the road; but it was hard to run that far home to him when the kids there liked to push him into the dirt and wrestle, and didn't like when Charlie cried. But they were all he knew until the day the law man's car broke down about half a mile up the road from their small, weathered home; and when Charlie found him, helped him out, and didn't have an answer when the man asked where Charlie went to school, he was opened to up to more.
Two weeks later, he cried when he had to say goodbye to his Pa, but his Pa chastised him for it; said that Charlie needed to keep his head up, that he was proud of him for getting to be the first Eqqin to go to school, and not to diminish that good name with no none o' that sissy cryin', now. And so he didn't look back when he climbed into the backseat of the politican's brand new black BMW, whose family he would quietly live with until he was 16 while he attended public school in their city. Despite knowing later in life that he was more than likely only a case to improve the man's political image (the charitable soul who sponsored an underprivileged kid's education and because of it would later get elected and re-elected to State Senate until hitting his limit at 4 full terms), Charlie was a dutiful kid who performed to his best despite his very late start; he was quiet, did his work, and even if he didn't always get along with the other kids, he was self-assured enough to not let it get to him or cause too much trouble. His Pa's last words to him resonated deep into his core, and he refused to ever tarnish his father's pride in him if he could help it.
He carried this mentality with him through every aspect of his life as he got older; despite rarely being able to see or communicate his father (who was illiterate, so Charlie couldn't write, and who refused to have a phone, so he couldn't call, either), his Pa was always what kept him on track, even up through when Charlie found himself in a position as a government agent. His father had already since passed by the time he officially got his badge, but Charlie considered it to be a title honoring him. He worked diligently within the bureau for twenty years, and was readying to seek his retirement, planning to return home to the plot of sand and dirt he grew up on in Arizona and remain there for the rest of his life--but he had one last assignment to take care of before his time was up.
Aliens had invaded some no-name backwoods town up north, and with his specializations in forensics and neutralization, he was sent to investigate the early scene of the landing. Upon arrival and being stripped of all his firearms, he was greatly disturbed to find that none of the residents seemed to give a damn about the aliens; he took to interviewing and gathering as much information as possible--this was all too odd for a job that was supposed to be quick and simple, especially when he found out he, too was affected by it all. And upon requesting backup, he'd been told that the unstable environmental situation had made it unsafe for them to send any other agents or to pull him from the mission, effectively stranding him until something can be done about the Gru, leading to his only option being to keep investigating and reporting back, attempting to resist where he can.
All he wants is to be done and retire.
EXTRAS
- 5'6" & 142lbs, he keeps his upper body well toned and works out often, but it makes him top heavy.
- His surname is grammatically incorrect due to his ancestry's illiteracy, but he refuses to have it changed on any legal documents out of pride for his heritage.
- He didn't think this assignment would last very long, so he only brought two suits, and the motel he's staying at doesn't do laundry--he can be found at the laundromat and dry cleaners' every Tuesday, and has been forced to gradually buy more clothes.
- Had a rental car for the first few days, but has had to let it go, leading him to have to rely solely on public transportation, or getting around on foot. He's given in and bought a bus pass.
- His motel room only has a tiny fridge (which he's had to pay extra for) and no kitchen, and a proper grocery store is too far to be able to get anything needing refrigeration back, so he's had to shop out of the gas station convenience store next door.
- Wears a thin black turtleneck under everything he wears; it masks a large hawk tattoo on his neck.
- Has never voted in an election, and lacks any kind of political stance.
